Get moving with NCC adventure outings

Jun 13, 2013

Freestyle skiing, downhill skiing and snowshoeing have been among the fastest growing outdoor sports in recent years. The City Club hasn’t organized events around those activities – yet – but we have upped our game with a series of adventure outings.

The participation and enthusiasm we saw in our marathon-training program inspired us to expand club-sponsored outdoor events, starting with a family-friendly canoe trip on the Harpeth River on June 29.

On July 20th we’ll do a moonlight zip-lining tour and on August 25 we’ll go white-water rafting.

Outdoor recreation has reached its highest participation level in at least five years, according to the Outdoor Foundation. A 2012 foundation study measured participation across 42 activities during the prior three years. Families, young adults and older adults are moving outside for bicycling, canoeing, climbing, fishing, rafting, running, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, stand-up paddling, and everything in between.

The trends show certain activities – including recreational kayaking and bow hunting, picking up serious steam. One-year increases in participation were 27 percent and 19 percent, respectively.

What motivates participation? Interestingly, many are the same factors that motivate City Club members generally. The top three motivators:

● Exercise 68%
● Be with family and friends 59%
● Get away from usual demands 51%

The planning involved in organizing an outing often keeps people from doing it, but our goal is to remove that stress of it for you. Because City Club staff handles planning and logistics, members and their guests have more freedom to enjoy themselves.

The four-hour canoe trip down the Gossett Track of the Harpeth River, for example, includes canoe rental, lunch and snacks – a hassle-free excursion for $35 per person.

RSVP to Ashlee at ashlee@nasvhillecity.com or 615.620.1329 by Wednesday, June 19. You’ve still got time to hop on the boat, or canoe in this case. We’re also planning a tour of Arrington Vineyards in late September and welcome any ideas for other adventures.

Let’s get moving!
